Papa Clem a Grade 2 winning son of Smart Strike and a 2009 Kentucky Derby contenter

Papa Clem is a graded stakes winner on both dirt and synthetic tracks. A winner at 2, in his 3yr old year he defeated eventual 3yr old champion Summer Bird in the G2 Arkansas Derby along with the highly regarded Old Fashioned after a gutsy stretch drive. In the lead up races to the Arkansas Derby, Papa Clem was just nipped at the wire in the G2 Robert B. Lewis by Poineerof The Nile and followed that up with an unlucky 2nd in the G2 Louisiana Derby. After his Arkansas triumph he went into the Kentucky Derby as one of the top picks and was lucky to save 4th after a very troubled trip.
Papa Clem closed out his three year old year after a layoff in the summer in the opening day feature of the 2009-2010 Santa Anita meet with a 3rd in the G1 Malibu Stakes. He came right back to win the G2 San Fernando three weeks later. A career ending injury was discovered shortly after the San Fernando.
